Earth Hour Launches Call for Public Messages to Deliver to World Leaders In Copenhagen
(PRWEB) November 24, 2009 -- Earth Hour (http://www.earthhour.org/) is calling for people all over the world to help create a powerful message for the world’s leaders when they arrive in Copenhagen for the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference on the 16th of December, 2009.
Building on Earth Hour 2009 (28 March, 2009), when hundreds of millions of people in over 4000 cities and towns in 88 countries throughout the world voted for a global mandate for climate change by turning off their lights, The People’s Orb will collect the images, voices and action of the world’s citizens to present to the decision makers who will meet to agree on how they take action on climate change.
The People’s Orb will contain 350 gigabytes of memory to create a collective message from the people of the world to its leaders – the time to act is now; the world needs a binding agreement in Copenhagen.
Suggestions for material to be included is being called for from every individual across the planet from now until it is presented at 7pm (Copenhagen time) on Wednesday, 16th of December.
Earth Hour Executive Director, Andy Ridley, says that the huge numbers of people who took part in Earth Hour 2009 is evidence that the planet’s population is calling for a global mandate on climate change.
“Our hope is that The People’s Orb will bring to life the desperate desire of the world’s residents for definitive action on climate change,” he says.
“We are calling for everyone to suggest what they believe will help deliver this message to those who hold our planet’s future in their hands.”
Suggestions for what should be included in The People’s Orb are being collected via Twitter (http://twitter.com/earthhour), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/earthhour) and the Earth Hour blog (http://earthhourblog.posterous.com).
Along with suggestions from individuals, The People’s Orb will also contain key climate change reports from the world’s most eminent scientists; representation from the world’s great thinkers on the need for action on climate change and representation from the leaders of the world’s cities calling for action on climate change.
The People’s Orb will begin its journey in Australia on 1st December, 2009, before travelling to Brussels to board The Climate Express train on 5th December along with 400 climate delegates travelling to Copenhagen. On its arrival in Copenhagen it will collaborate the efforts of all major climate campaigns including tcktcktck, 350.org, UNEP, Raise Your Voice, Hopenhagen, the Copenhagen Climate Council, C40 and Earth Hour’s Vote Earth to present a definitive singular message to the UN on the 16th December.
It will be entrusted to a representative of the United Nations during a dedicated Earth Hour Copenhagen on 16th December when the lights of the city will be turned off and the City Hall will be lit by over 10,000 lanterns made by children from all over the world.
